The Miami River Marine Group (MRMG) is a private port cooperative trade association consisting of cargo

carriers and marine related industry companies dedicated to preserving the Miami River as a working river--Florida's

Fifth Largest Port.  In the past ten years, improvements in local and international economies have been reflected by

an increase in the activity and vitality of the working river.   Goods shipped from the Miami River are sent to over 80

ports of call in the Caribbean and Central and South America. Just as Miami serves as the gateway to the Americas,

the Miami River serves as the shallow draft port for foreign flag vessels coming from similar shallow ports in this

part of the world (shallow drafts are necessary for the Miami River which is only 15 feet deep).

The Miami River Commission was formed by the Florida Legislature in 1998  as the official clearinghouse for all

public policy and projects related to the Miami River. Its mission is to help ensure that government agencies,

businesses and residents speak with one voice on river issues.  In less than three years, the commission has

brought about the river's first dredging in nearly 70 years, and put into motion a Greenways program to reclaim and

enhance the river's environs and landscape. It has worked with varied interests to work with common cause to make

the river stronger economically and environmentally. The commission seeks to improve every aspect of river life.
